Wire gauge: Commercial-grade strings use thicker wire (typically 18AWG vs 22AWG on retail strings). Thicker wire handles the amperage from longer runs without overheating and holds up better to repeated freezing and thawing.
Connector quality: The biggest failure point on cheap lights is the connector between strings. Commercial connectors are weatherproofed, locking, and rated for outdoor use. Retail connectors corrode quickly when exposed to Calgary winters.
